Notities

Graduated from Yale College in 1778. Made Comptroller of the State of Conn. in 1788, Auditor of the National Treasury under Alexander Hamilton in 1789, Comptroller of the U.S. Treasury in 1791, and the Secratary of the Treasury replacing Hamilton. He held this last post for about 6 years until Jefferson was elected President. Chief Magistrate of Ct. in 1817. Honorary degree of LL.D. from Yale college in 1819. Oliver was a very devoted follower of Hamiliton, as were many of his fellow cabinet members. He very frequently consulted with Hamilton on major policy decisions. When Hamilton was killed in a duel with Aaron Burr, it was Oliver who, with other Hamilton followers, purchased Hamiltons estate at public auction and presented it to Hamiltons widow.
